“The psychic automatism is a way for thoughts to come to the surface in their original state” (Jean Starobinski)
Form- and material-language of objects and installations are the main aspect of this course, in which the intuitive access plays an essential role.
Sculptural objects and installations are developed through drawing or “three dimensional sketches.” Depending on the possibilities, these are implemented or presentation options are played through with the maquettes.
The aim is to reinforce one's own approach and to gain a precise idea of form, size, and material. Further to think through technical implementation options for the objects, and to experiment with presentation possibilities in relation to the space.
During the workshop, the works of various artists will be discussed so that formal similarities can be discovered. I will also provide insight into my own working methods, in the development of which the drawing and the maquette play an essential role, as do size, material, and formal language.
At the beginning of the workshop, the various approaches will be discussed on the basis of the participants' portfolios and explored in more depth in individual discussions. It is essential for me to address the artistic process of each participant. Students can also refer to existing ideas that have not yet been developed or completed.

Julie Hayward
The starting-point for Julie Hayward's works is drawing, which happens in a kind of psychic automatism. In a variety of media, objects reminiscent of science fiction are developed, deliberately evoking ambiguous emotions. Thus information or emotions stored in the subconscious assume a concrete form that reflects a psychic parallel world. Much is clear, and a little frightening – yet somehow remains vague. Humour and irony are essential aspects of these inventions, which raise existential questions.
