Nowadays we use our camera, mostly with our phones, widely to produce numerous visual data. This material is often dismissed, deleted, shared online, and in the best case stored in its digital form. In this course, we will use our (phone’s) photo and video libraries to develop and produce a personal as well as a collective body of work.
Reviewing our material will allow each participant to define a subject of interest in order to build a personal visual narrative, using mainly photography and video. We will approach different references of artists using archival images or their personal archives and reflecting on virtuality and digitality in the present age.
We will be using BigBlueButton or any similar video-conferencing open source software that doesn’t violate privacy while having good educational tools such as screen-sharing, whiteboard, recording, presentation sharing, file and attachment sharing, notes, webcam streaming and multi-presenter support.
The theoretical component of the class will be given by both co-teachers to the whole class using video-conferencing software.
We will have one-on-one mentoring sessions, with each co-teacher taking half the class, and group critique sessions where the participants can show their work and discuss it with their peers. The sessions will be divided into morning and afternoon. In between, students are expected to work on their projects. If they have any question or concerns, we will be available to answer them online outside the meeting sessions. We will publish the students' final outcomes on an online platform which we will build together during the workshop.

- What to bring
- All (phone) library photos, videos and sound recordings saved on a hard drive or USB + laptops. Every participant is invited to prepare a short presentation of former or current projects.

Randa Mirza
Randa Mirza was born in Beirut in 1978, she lives between Marseille (FR) and Beirut. She works mainly with photography and live video performances, and questions the nature of images and their social uses. Her practice is related to identity with a focus on gender studies and postcolonial discourses. She manipulates the photographic image to reveal the discourses inherent in all representations on the tenuous border between fiction and reality.

Lara Tabet
Lara Tabet, born in Achkout (LI) in 1983, is a practising medical doctor and visual artist. Her artistic practice is informed by her background in pathology and inspects the legacy of trauma in Lebanon. Her most recent work contemplates the relationship between the individual and public/private space in connection with gender, sexuality and identity.
