The focal point of this class will be reflection on one’s own painterly decisions. The artistic take in this class would be a process of thinking, acting, watching and reacting. On the way, we will talk about priming, the quality of different colours and paint. We will also discuss pivotal points in the development of a composition, and the question of when to stop working on a piece.
Thinking and reflecting on the practice of exhibiting will be an important element towards the last segment of the class, since we want to set up a little show of student works. Each participant will have the chance of presenting two paintings that would either support each other or have a relation in their polarity.
These two works can be abstract as well as figurative they could support or describe an atmosphere, a certain rhythm
they can be two words in one sentence
they can be like the beginning or end of a song
they can be even two visual descriptions of the same sound
they can show two different parts of one body
they can be one thought in the morning and one in the evening
they can include the wish to transport a certain smell
they can be complete or incomplete
they can be of similar scales or also of completely different ones
…
Another option would be that there will be only one work on view which is related to an already existing work from another artist you admire (or even not).

- Welcome are all artistic methods of creating a painting and we will not draw distinctions between abstract and figurative approaches.
- What to bring
- Favourite tools and materials for working in your preferred medium (drawing, painting), portfolio/data files or images of previous works, laptop if available. Generally, students should bring the materials they are familiar with in their practice.

Svenja Deininger
Svenja Deininger, born in Vienna in 1974, lives and works in Vienna, Milan (IT) and Berlin. Graduated in 2003 at Kunstakademie Düsseldorf (DE), (Prof. Albert Oehlen).
Suspended in a hybrid space somewhere between the abstract and the figurative, Svenja Deininger’s works combine various elements of a visual approach that includes the memories of objects and formal intuitions. (…) Her canvases become a synthesis of tactile possibilities and architectural references, demonstrating how abstract and apparently non-figurative painting need not abandon the elaboration of reality but can be the result of an intense contemplation and representation of its data.
